Why cardiac dynamics?

Cardiac malfunction is one of the most prevalent causes of death in developed countries. About one fourth of us will die of a cardiac disease. Pretty good reason to study it, isn’t it?

Not convinced? Well, it is fun. Instabilities in wave propagation, spiral and scroll patterns, complex geometries, anisotropy, bifurcations to complex rhythms, excitable dynamics, stochastic effects in ionic channels and intracellular calcium, coupling to contraction, mutations... what else is needed? (right, beer).

Who are we?

We are members of the Department of Applied Physics, at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya that, among other topics, are currently working on the dynamics of cardiac action potential propagation. In particular, we are interested in applying techniques from nonlinear dynamics and non-equilibrium pattern formation to the study of different cardiac instabilities giving rise to arrhythmias.
